This month in the garden, we harvested a few different crops.
In Sligo, there are still quite a few plants growing, so there wasn’t a huge amount to pick just chillies, tomatoes and a few flowers.
The garden is definitely starting to feel more autumnal, but there’s still plenty happening and always something to do.

In Co. Offaly, where my parents-in-law are based and where we grow more of our vegetables, the garden was much more abundant this month.
Sometimes you just never know what the plants are going to give you. This year, we ended up with more squash than we could realistically eat ourselves, so I brought some back to Sligo and gave them to people who appreciate good organic produce.
I also managed to sell some , which was great. Growing vegetables can take quite a lot of time and work, so it felt good to make something back.

Carrots were abundant this year too! Got a few different varieties planted like the rainbow, which I find really nice and I also sowed two more orange varieties. Some of these you could easily confused them with parsnips but they are actually white carrots. Same flavor as an orange one !

This calendula patch is a different one, I sowed a few seeds at the end of the patch and the calendula just liked the area, and now they are happily growing. My old patch at this stage has gone to seed.

I sowed these poppies earlier in the season , I found them flowering last time, which was a lovely surprise, I will to pick the heads before they spread all over and I want to use the seeds to make lovely exfoliating soap

What a courgette! It’s October and we are still going through it! we added to many meals already! That’s a good surprise we found this month.

My husband harvested some rooster potatoes, and they were nice!
Some of them had quite a bit of scab, which wasn’t ideal, but they were still perfectly good for our meals. Not every vegetable from the garden has to look perfect to be worth growing.

As winter is approaching, we also covered some of the woodchip we use for the footpaths and in the tunnel. We had quite a bit all around , and we didn’t want it to get too wet and start to rot over the winter. Hopefully, it will keep well and be ready to use again next year.
Another little job ticked off the list this month.

So happy with how well our tomatoes have performed this year. These are the ones we planted earlier in the year in the tunnel, in our vegetable patch in Co. Offaly.
We’ve been harvesting them and making different things. I shared how I made tomato sauce with some of our harvest you can find the recipe here!

The pumpkins are coming along nicely!
I was tempted to harvest some, but it’s better to leave them on the plant a little longer so they can mature properly.

We sowed this type of spinach earlier in the year and really enjoyed it, so I decided to sow another batch before winter arrives.
Here’s how it’s looking so far!
It’s always nice when you find something that grows well and you actually enjoy eating, so it makes sense for us to grow it again.

One of the veggies I don’t mind to grow much are carrots and beets, if you store them in a cool place they can last for a while and for example us, we eat a lot of carrots so its worth it to grow them. We often store them in boxes in our shed, I am glad we have plenty for the months ahead.

My herb bed is quite good some of my favorites are growing here , I have a little bit of everything one of my favorite is the sage, which i love grinding and using in meals or soap making.

And that’s a little look at what’s been happening in the garden this September.
It was a busy month, with plenty harvesting, growing and little jobs here and there, soap making ect.. I hope you made it all the way to the end!
What has been growing in your garden this September? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
